Colour Blocking In Your Home

This technique can be found in all areas of life where creating a visual impact is desired, be that in fashion, graphic design or accessories for your home. Colour-blocking is a well-established way of selecting the colours and décor for your interiors and although it can be left to interior designers, it is quite simple to achieve its effect yourself.

Though colour-blocking is normally left to more modern establishments, it can work well and bring energy to a more traditional setting. With a few simple touches and a bit of know-how, many Do-It-Yourself-ers are already embracing the benefits.

It works by utilising the aesthetic properties of solid blocks of complimentary or contrasting colours. For a more drastic effect, clashing colours could even be used. Probably the strongest way of achieving this is by block painting the walls but on a smaller scale you could simply start with some solid coloured accessories, such as rugs or pieces of art.

The key factor is keeping the number of colours to a minimum, typically 3 or 4 at maximum. To get an idea of what colours do sit well together, you can start with a colour wheel and go by the colours which sit opposite each other. Colour blocking works especially well when the room has a neutral palette and you add a striking touch of colour, creating a focal point.

Soft Furnishings and Upholstery
Fabric offers an opportunity to get creative in the home, as it is used so prolifically. It comes in the form of upholstery on furniture, window coverings, wall hangings, pillows, towels and so on. If solid colour curtains are a little too much, blinds are an attractive alternative as they come in all colours but can be broken up with interesting textures. They can also be more durable than curtains and vary in density, to allow different levels of light through.

In the bedroom for example, you could either upholster your headboard or add some bold coloured pillows. Fit some curtains or blinds of the same colour and the room will really come to life. A few contrasting accessories, such as lamp shades, provide balance and will make the colour blocks appear less overpowering.

Paint
Painting your walls bright colours can be dangerous territory, but can work if used correctly. If you do want to use a bold colour in a room, only use it on one wall and make sure the other walls are lighter in colour, so the room doesn’t feel too enclosed. A neutral colour provides a good base on which colour blocks can be places, such as interesting geometric shapes or stripes. Lines of colour can either lengthen or heighten a room, if placed horizontally or vertically.

For a more subtle effect, use a block of colour just off the neutral shade you have used as your main for the wall, such as beige next to a crisp white.

Art
You needn’t just paint on your walls to create a powerful effect. With a few carefully selected pieces in the right frames, you can really liven up your space. Maybe even create your own!

This is a simple technique that can work in any room of a house and provide you with a vibrant and eye catching living space.
