How To Choose A Baby High Chair |
|
Article Detail :If you plan to purchase new baby furniture, you may want to think about getting a baby high chair. In years past, people were stuck with traditional and boring styles of baby high chairs. Most were made of natural wood with a single lap belt and sliding tray that could be moved when struck lightly. As time has passed, baby high chairs have come a long way.
Safety Aspect of Baby High Chairs
While baby high chairs were once made with little attention to safety, today’s models are made to meet the high safety standards. Before you buy a baby high chair, do some research to learn what safety features you should look for. Most baby items are inspected before they ever make it to the shelves of your local department store but you can never be too cautious. Look for inspection stickers or manufacturer warrantees before you purchase any baby product, including a baby high chair.
To ensure that baby high chairs are stable and steady, they must have wide leg bases. Look for baby high chairs with solid legs made from metal, plastic or wood. These will be more stable than hollow legs, to prevent the chair from tipping over if the baby gets excited or wiggles around too much.
Have you ever wondered what keeps babies from actually falling out of high chairs? If you want to get a baby high chair that is totally safe, look for a three or five point restraint system built into the baby pillows lining the chair. Basic lap belts no longer meet safety standards. Although they may be simpler to operate, lap belts can easily unfasten, causing babies to slip and fall. They also pose a choking hazard if your baby would get tangled up in extra belt length, hanging from the back of the chair. With three or five point restraint systems, this is no longer a problem. The three or five point safety harnesses are made with extreme caution in mind.
In general, babies are able to sit up enough to use baby high chairs once they are capable of consuming solid foods. Though each baby differs from the next, this usually occurs after six months of age. You should begin to introduce your baby to the high chair at around four months of age, by gently propping him or her up in the chair with help of soft baby pillows. You should look for small cushions to prop your baby up in the chair. You can find kid pillows with washable pillow cases that are perfect for the high chair. Prop your little one up to get accustomed to the feel of a baby high chair. Remember to never leave your child unattended in the chair, or anywhere near kid pillows because they can be a suffocation hazard.
Once your baby begins to eat solid foods, continue to use kid pillows in the high chair to make it more comfortable for your baby. Don’t expect your little one to be happy about sitting in a hard seat while you eat dinner from the cushiony chairs at the dining room table. Add soft baby pillows to your baby high chair and your child will soon enjoy meal times.
