How to decorate small rooms?

We live in the world where big spaces have become a luxury. But the question arises how to decorate small rooms and spaces. Homes of different sizes and shapes often have these decorating questions like these:

  1. How to make the space practical and functional?
  2. How to make home stylish and welcoming?
  3. And the most frequently asked question at all…Is there any way to make space look larger and bigger?
  4. Here are some decorating tips:

  • Limit the furniture in the room. Keep the furniture pieces in small and keep the home clutter free. In other words, use a love seat instead of sofa and consider a slipper chair instead of oversized easy chair. Large bulky furniture piece will make the room look small. Make sure that major furniture pieces are upholstered in bold color, or in a subtle pattern. If your sofa has a bold pattern, consider buying slip cover in solid color, if you don’t need to pay for reupholstering.
  • Try to use patterns sparingly, especially in small areas. Good choices for pattern usage include throw pillows, area rugs and blankets. As a general rule, any patterns ina room, like upholstery, window treatment, rugs, wallpaper-should be small in scale. Think of small, delicate floral print rather than large, dramatic flowers.
  • Hang mirrors of different sized on the walls. They are the easiest way to create false illusion of space.
  • Paint the walls in a solid color or use subtle faux finish with two colors combined. If you wish to go for wall paper, use either solid color or extremely subtle or neutral tone.
  • Use cool color like blue, violet and green on the walls to give false illusion of expansion. But if you opt for warm colors, don’t fret- you can paint the walls in neutral shades witha s light cool shadow. For instance, use a white with a slight shade of blue rather than hint of cream or red or with a slight tint of green rather than tint of orange.
  • If there are no windows in the room, hang paintings or artwork in attractive frames to create the feeling of window less room
  • Ensure that you keep the clutter to a minimum. To make this possible, ensure that room has adequate storage spaces. Take benefit of shelves, drawers, armories with drawers, window seats with storage space underneath and coffee tables that open up for storage.
  • Think about vertical storage pieces that extend the ceiling height. You can accentuate the home with decorative accents at the top of tall furniture pieces like you can place real or artificial greenery, to draw attention.  Hang long drapes from the ceiling to make the home visually appealing. Line the top of the wall, where it meets ceiling with help of shelving or a wall border.1
